I recently placed an order with World of Books and thought I would share what I bought. In total, I bought six books including classics, plays and literary novels.

What Books I’ve Bought Lately | July 2023

Interview with a Vampire by Anne Rice

I’ve seen the movie of Interview with a Vampire but I’ve never read the book, and with the recent TV series out I was recommended it by a friend. I know the story is a lot darker than other vampire stories I read – namely Twilight – and I’ve never done well with ‘horror’ but I’m looking forward to giving it a go.

A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams

I recently saw A Streetcar Named Desire on stage with Paul Mescal and Patsy Ferran. Patsy’s performance as Blanche Dubois was amazing, and I was fascinated by the staging. One thing I like to do after seeing a play is to read the script, odd I know, but it’s like seeing the performance twice.

Days of Abandonment by Elena Ferrante

A few months ago I read The Lost Daughter by Elena Ferrante and I thought I would try another one of her other novels. This story is about a woman who is unceremoniously dumped by her husband one night after dinner, and her descent into solitude as a mother, ex-wife and single woman.

The Snow Queen by Hans Christan Andersen

I finally completed the set of illustrated Christmas classics by Sanna Annukka. This is a classic novel by Hans Christen Andersen about friendship and adventure.

The Well of Loneliness by Radclyffe Hall

Radclyffe Hall was a fascinating writer from the Edwardian period who was famously and unashamedly a lesbian in a time when this was unacceptable. The Well of Loneliness is her most famous work about a woman called Stephen who never fits in. I’ve yet to read it, but it’s been on my to-read list for years so I’m looking forward to diving in.

Les Liaisons Dangereuses by Choderlos de Laclos

And finally, I recently began watching Dangerous Liaisons with John Malkovich (although I didn’t finish it!) and I thought I would get the books. I’ve never read anything by Choderlos de Laclos so I’m excited to see what his work is like.

What books have you bought lately? Let me know in the comments below.
