Short Books To Read When You’re Feeling Stressed

The first few months of the New Year can be stressful, what with going back to work after a break, the cold nights, and the short days. To help, here is a list of short books to read when feeling stressed or overwhelmed.

Short Books To Read When You’re Feeling Stressed

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by J.K. Rowling

First up, is a beloved children’s classic. Yes, the author is problematic, but the characters are bigger than the author. Reading Harry Potter is like coming home for me, I get such a warm and comforting feeling when I read this series, but in particular the first novel in the series.

Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Tosikazu Kawaguchi

If you’re looking for some a little bit quirky then read Before the Coffee Gets Cold. This gorgeous literary novel is super short and is adapted from a play so it’s very lyrical. The story focuses on an ensemble of characters who visit a simple cafe in Japan, but for one cup of coffee, they can travel back in time. But they have to return before the coffee gets cold, or they’re stuck in the past forever.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis

Another children’s classic that is a comforting read for many, and that is The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. A charming read with a lot of religious rhetoric. Following the four Pevensie children, they travel through the land of Narnia meeting a cast of beloved characters, including Father Christmas. A great adventure story.

The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton

I discovered The Outsiders in 2020 and I loved it. It’s a bit more hard-hitting compared to other titles on this list, but the innocence of the characters is what makes this book a go-to for me. The friendships and the love of the boys in this story are palpable. Well worth a read if you haven’t already.

Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata

Another Japanese-translated fiction story. Focusing on a woman who works in a convenience store, and loves it. Everyone expects her to hate it and to give it up, in place of a ‘real career’ but the woman adores her store. It’s where she belongs. But peer pressure and society are forcing her to leave. A really lovely story where nothing really happens, but it still manages to touch a nerve.

A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens

And finally, a classic. Traditionally read at Christmas, but A Christmas Carol can be read all year round. This beautiful story of familiar characters will bring a smile to your face when you’re feeling stressed. Cuddle up with a hot drink and a blanket for an extra cosy impact.
