My Latest Book Haul
It’s been a little while since I shared a book haul but miraculously I haven’t bought that many books lately. The ones I have I’ve detailed down below.
Book Haul UK
The Wolf Den is a historical story set in Pompeii before the eruption of the volcano. Amara is a slave living and working within a brothel in the heart of Pompeii, and the story is a reimagining of the life of women in this ancient city.
I finally bought Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid. After reading Daisy Jones and The Six and The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo I’ve been desperate to read more of Taylor Jenkins Reid. Malibu Rising is set in in the 1980s, in the heart of the music world. There’s a mystery, glamour and a link to her previous books. I cannot wait.
Agatha Christie is a favourite of mine. I’ve read quite a few of her books now, and with the recent release of a new TV series, I thought I would pick up another of her titles. This is a standalone novel, where two friends decide to solve a murder after hearing the last words of a man who plunged from a clifftop.
Unwell Women by Elinor Cleghorn is a non-fiction history book that reviews the medical treatment of women throughout the ages. It is no secret that the world of medicine favour men, over women, and this book explains why. Reviewing medical beliefs about the womb from Ancient Greece times, to modern-day ignorance about endometriosis and auto-immune diseases.
In hardback, I recently purchased a memoir by US writer Sophia Benoit. Well This is Exhausting is a collection of essays about millennial life, growing up a feminist and moving to the city to make her name as a journalist. It’s not been published in the UK, although you can easily find a US copy; but after reading the sample chapter I knew that this was a book for me.
In paperback, I picked up a Virago Modern Classic on a recent second-hand shopping trip. I’ve never read any George Eliot; Middlemarch has yet to pique my interest. But this novella looked interesting to me. The main character, Latimer, becomes obsessed with his brother’s fiance, Bertha, after having clairvoyant visions. A mix of gothic and romance.
That’s it for my latest book haul UK. What books have you bought recently? Let me know in the comments below.
