Mid Year Book Freak Out Tag 2022

We’re nearly at the end of June, unbelievably, so it’s time to do the Mid Year Book Freak Out Tag 2022.

Best book you’ve read so far in 2022.

This year has been a tough one and my reading has fallen behind as a result, but I’ve still managed to read 43 books so far this year. Only 3 behind schedule, according to Goodreads.

Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2022.

Apart from the Harry Potter series, the only sequel I’ve read this year is The Women of Troy by Pat Barker. It isn’t my favourite book of the year, and I definitely preferred the first book in the series, but it wasn’t bad.

New release you haven’t read yet, but want to.

There are so many books! But I really want to read Lessons in Chemistry. I did start it recently, but I had to put it down for various reasons. It had a great start though, so I’m looking forward to finishing it.

Most anticipated release for the second half of the year.

I’m looking forward to the next book by Kirsty Capes. Love Me, Love Me Not is out on the 7th July. I know Kirsty and she told me a little bit about her new book last year and I’m really excited to read it.

Biggest disappointment.

It’s a tie between Mary Poppins by P.L. Travers and A Room of One’s Own by Virginia Woolf. Both classics and both boring as hell. Honestly, I struggled to finish both of them and it was only their ‘classic’ status that propelled me to the end.

Biggest surprise.

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed Forever Young by Hayley Mills. Hayley is a famous child actress from the 1960s. She is probably most famous for playing Pollyanna in the titular Disney film. Her book was in a deal for 99p so I picked it up, but I really enjoyed reading it and learned a lot about the Hollywood post-golden era.

Favourite new author. (Debut or new to you)

Ooh, I read Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg, and I really enjoyed it. It’s a difficult book, and there are problematic moments, but the familial, sentimental moments were really sweet. Plus, I like the LGBT undertones and would read another book by Fannie Flagg.

Newest fictional crush.

I don’t typically fall for fictional characters… so I don’t think I have a new fictional crush. Although reading Julia Quinn I always fall slightly in love with the leading man.

Newest favorite character.

I fell for Idgie Threadgoode out of Fried Green Tomatoes and the Whistle Stop Cafe. She is all about family, she’s funny, and she doesn’t care about ‘the times’ mentality. People are people and she will treat them well so long as they treat others well. One of those characters that have a lot of love to share, and they share it as much as they can.

Book that made you cry.

I haven’t cried at a book so far this year… I’m sure that will change.

Book that made you happy.

I found a lot of joy in re-reading Sense and Sensibility at the beginning of the year. I first read it when I was 16 years old and barely got it, but this time I saw the humour and the reality within the storylines and I liked it a lot.

Favorite book to film adaptation you saw this year.

So far, my favourite book to film adaptation has been The Hating Game on Amazon Prime. I watched it a few months ago, at 4 am, when I was unwell, and really enjoyed it. I had struggled with the book for some reason – it’s a romance set in publishing?! How did I not love it? – but I loved the cheesy movie.

Most beautiful book you’ve bought so far this year (or received)

Ooh, I’ve bought and received quite a few books this year. But I think the prettiest books I’ve got this year are from the new Collins Modern Classics. I was gifted a few after leaving HarperCollins at the end of May. Now I want the set.

What books do you need to read by the end of the year?

Ooh, I don’t think I have any books I need to read by the end of the year. Apart from the books that I’m marketing in my new role, of course.

And that’s my Mid Year Book Freak Out Tag 2022. What would your answers be? Let me know in the comments below.
