Halloween Reading Recommendations 2023

Looking for a book to get you into the Halloween mood? Today I thought I would share some of my Halloween Reading Recommendations for 2023. There’s a book for everyone, from scary and dark to cosy and magical.

Halloween Reading Recommendations 2023

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving

To kick-start, let’s start with a novella. This is the story of Ichabod Crane and the unnerving headless huntsman of Sleepy Hollow. A very easy but eerie read.

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley

Speaking of easy but eerie, you can never go wrong with Frankenstein when it comes to a Halloween read. The original story focuses a lot more on morals and ethics than some of the favoured films and adaptations, but it’s still a fantastic read about humanity and monsters.

Interview with a Vampire by Anne Rice

A beloved vampiric tale with a twist. This is a bloody, throat-ripper of a story that fans of traditional vampire stories will love. The film and TV series aren’t bad either.

The Magic Toyshop by Angela Carter

This 1960s novel incorporates many of the traditional fairy tales into its plot line about a young woman whose parents are killed and has to move in with her abusive uncle, in his magic toyshop. It’s more gothic than fantasy, but still an atmospheric read for Halloween.

Fairytales by The Brothers Grimm

Why not just go for the original horror stories, these fairytales were not meant to be sweet and romantic they are terrifying and bloody.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by J.K. Rowling

And finally, a beloved children’s classic that is Autumnal and magical, and therefore a Halloween read in my mind. Escape back to Hogwarts in the first book in the series.
