If you’re after some fireside fiction, then these are the top cosy Autumn reads I recommend for 2022.

Cosy Autumn Reads 2022

Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen

A classic with a strong gothic feel. This is one of my favourite Jane Austen novels, it follows Catherine Morland. A 16-year-old girl obsessed with gothic stories who journeys to Bath with friends and falls for the lovable Henry Tilney. Henry is a lovely and very handsome man, but his family is very wealthy and lives at the mysterious Northanger Abbey. Catherine’s over-active imagination gets away with her and threatens her relationship with Tilney. It’s a super sweet romance about a silly girl, with a strong gothic vibe. I love it.

The Familiars by Stacey Halls

A spell-binding book about the time when the witch trials were imminent and any woman with confidence in her abilities was a threat to society. The story follows two women, one Fleetwood Shuttleworth who is pregnant but has been predicted to die in childbirth, and her midwife Alice Grey who vows to stop that from happening.

Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi

A translated novel, based originally on a play, about a cafe where it’s possible to travel back in time. But only in that cafe and only until the coffee goes cold. If you don’t return to the present by that point you’re stuck in the past forever. It’s a very sweet story about past regrets, grief and love.

Anne of Green Gables by L. Maud Montgomery

If you want to fall into a book of beautiful descriptions and heartwarming characters, then pick up the Anne of Green Gables series.

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

And finally, journey to Concord, Massachusetts with the March sisters. I love this book and love how the seasons and years pass so we get to see them in all their glory. Mistakes and all. Perfect for a bit of fireside reading.
