Books Over 500 Pages Worth Reading

Today I thought I would share a reading recommendations list. This list is about books over 500 pages worth reading.

This is a book for those that love a long read. Or are dedicating themselves to one book for a long period of time.

A lot of these books are fantasy, as that’s a genre that lends itself well to big books due to world-building. But there are also a few classics, historical and children’s books for good measure.

Books over 500 pages worth reading

David Copperfield by Charles Dickens – 1028 pages

To start with, I highly recommend Charles Dickens’ opus David Copperfield. This semi-autobiographical novel is full of characters and storylines, and it packs a punch. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry and you’ll find yourself rooting for certain characters. I recommend listening to the audiobook narrated by Richard Armitage. He does a brilliant job of separating each character’s voice.

Outlander by Diana Gabaldon – 882 pages

Outlander is a time-travel historical romance set between the 1940s and 1740s in Scotland. WW2 nurse Claire Randall is transported back to the 1700s, where a whole lot of drama – and romance! – occurs. Whilst time travels obviously play a part in this story, it’s more of a historical romance packed with detail. The first in a series and, of course, the material for the Outlander TV series.

A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin – 819 pages

I’ve yet to find a fantasy fan that hasn’t read A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin. This is the first in the Song of Ice and Fire series. It follows the Stark family, among many other characters. The first book is definitely the best in the series and the descriptions are incredible. Although the world is entirely new and fictional, it feels recognizable and real. An impressive feat.

The Other Boleyn Girl by Phillipa Gregory – 544 pages

I went through a big Phillipa Gregory phase when I was in my teens. This was the first book of hers I read and it was fantastic. I was definitely too young to read it. There are a lot of sexual descriptions and I was probably 13 when I read it… But you can’t beat the historical descriptions of her writing. And this is a good place to start if you’re interested in Tudor history.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J.K. Rowling – 815 pages

And finally, a childhood favourite. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is the largest book in the HP series. It also has the most trauma and drama in the series. This book, Philosopher’s Stone and Prisoner of Azkaban jumped between my top spot when I re-read them. Definitely start with the first if you’ve yet to read Harry Potter. But this is a pacy read when you get to it.

And that’s it for my recommendations of books over 500 pages worth reading. I hope you like it and you find your next long read. If you do, let me know in the comments below.

  1. Hi Ellie, I was intrigued by this category (over 500 pages) of book. And my novel Dolly Considine’s Hotel has 520 pages, possibly one of the longest fiction books traditionally published this year. Although for some reason my publisher (Unbound) and Amazon list it as having only 320 pages. Would you consider reviewing it? Happy to send you paper copy or ebook format.
