In June 2021, so less than six months, my debut novel What Planet Can I Blame This On? is being published by Hodder Studio in ebook, paperback and audiobook. 🪐🚀

How did I get a book deal? 🪐
During lockdown, I wrote a novel, and then during lockdown 2.0 I wrote another one!
My agent, Hannah Weatherill from Northbank Talent Agency, is a superstar and was sharing my work with publishers up and down the country, despite the national lockdown. And, luckily for me, Bea Fitzgerald at Hodder Studio enjoyed my writing enough to get in touch.
I was sitting in my flat, a few months later after some back and forth, at 11 am when I got the email with the offer.
Of course, even though it was a work day – and still morning – I had to have a glass of bubbly. Especially as I couldn’t tell anyone!
There may have also been some dancing involved.
In September 2020, I signed the contract for What Planet Can I Blame This On? and I was beyond excited. The news didn’t sink in for quite a while – and by a while, I mean I was still saying ‘if this book gets published’ three months after I signed the deal and was doing my edits!
What’s What Planet Can I Blame This On about? 🚀
What Planet Can I Blame This On? is a romantic comedy about Krystal, who turns to the stars for answers when her life seemingly falls to bits.
As Krystal approaches her 29th birthday her life is perfect but when it’s all upended and her friend blames it on her Saturn Return, Krystal turns to horoscopes, crystals and even a tarot card or two.
She’s never bought into all of this before but maybe it’s time to re-evaluate – because if the stars got her into this mess, they can get her out of it.
I’m quite a cynical person myself, but I do find myself with one foot in and one foot out when it comes to astrology.
As a proud Gemini, I strongly believe that the rising sign we are born under, in other words, your star sign, is important to our personalities. Also, birth charts are scarily accurate!
What happens next? ✨
The book is in and with my editor. I have seen the cover – OH MY GOD – and I’m meeting with the team over at Hodder Studio (online, of course) to go over all things creative and fun. I have so many ideas and I can only apologise in advance to the Marcomms team for my enthusiasm. They have no idea what’s coming!
As for the current state of the world, I’m not particularly worried about potentially being published in the midst of a pandemic. I know from my experience as a Marketing Manager of commercial fiction that it’s not all doom and gloom. Some exciting elements such as author events and roaming the town to see copies of your book in the wild is potentially lost, but people will always need books for escapism. Particularly, when they’re stuck at home.
I’ll be sharing A LOT of content about the book and the behind-the-scenes processes on my blog and my social media over the coming weeks. Mostly because I want to document the whole process from ‘the other side’.
