Priscilla, Queen of the Desert
‘A cock, in a frock, on a rock’. A must-watch for any drag race fan. This iconic Australian comedy will have you crying with laughter and smiling warmly at your screen. An adorable story about friendship, fatherhood and drag culture.
The Birdcage
Robin Williams is the owner of a Drag Club in New York City. This doubled-over with laughter comedy is a forgotten gem. Hank Azaria as the dresser steals the show with his calm yet indifferent delivery, whilst Nathan Lane as Robin William’s life partner is an over-the-top dramatic dame. I love it.
To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newman
Who knew Patrick Swayze, the macho dreamboat from Dirty Dancing would make such a stunning queen in To Wong Foo? This film boasts a strong cast including Swayze, John Leguizamo, Wesley Snipes and Stockard Channing. When three drag queens decide to drive across America to a Drag competition, they never mean to get stuck – running from the murder of a racist police officer, they accidentally committed – in Snydersville.
Some Like It Hot
Whilst unintentional, this classic movie with men in drag stands the test of time. I have never had to stop a film so often, I was missing too much from laughing. Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon were perfectly cast as two haphazard musicians, running from the mob. Deciding the best thing to do is hide as female musicians with a dancing troop, including Marilyn Monroe, the two of them get into buckets of trouble.
Kinky Boots
Chiwetel Ejiofor’s star-turn as Lola/Simon is a brilliant piece of acting. He plays a drag queen, who is rescued by Joel Egerton, and who in turn rescues the business that Joel Egerton’s character is struggling to maintain. I will never forget the definition of the colour red after seeing this film.
