Best Books Set in Scotland
I’ve only been to Scotland once – Edinburgh – but I really want to go back. There is something about the lochs, the accent, and the general look of Scotland that makes me fall in love with it. And why I read so many books set there.
Here are some of my top recommendations for books set in Scotland.
The first in the famous Rebus crime series by Ian Rankin. I read this book for a module at University on crime fiction, and it was excellent. When I went to Edinburgh in 2018 I visited the Writers Museum in Old Town. There was an Ian Rankin exhibition while I was there and I learned all about Ian Rankin’s inspiration and study to write this bestselling series. Well worth a read.
Helen is an Avon author and all of her books are set in Scotland. Her Perfect series is incredible, but I wanted to recommend her standalone The Shadow Man because it’s so dark and really shows off Edinburgh in its darkest corners. Not for the faint-hearted but a fantastically gripping read.
A time-travel romance that is addictive. When Claire Randall from the 1940s finds herself back in Scotland in the 1700s the changes are massive. Thankfully she was brought up by an archaeologist and has the skills and sense to get by in this troublesome period of Scottish history. And the Scottish lairds aren’t too bad either… at least, Jamie Fraser isn’t.
The ultimate Scottish classic is still referred to as the Scottish Play behind-the-scenes at the theatre. I think it’s a travesty if Macbeth isn’t played with a Scottish accent. A murderous tragedy about the effects of greed and vanity.
Technically not entirely set in Scotland, the main characters of One Day, Emma and Dexter, first meet at the University of Edinburgh. It’s an emotional romance set across twenty-plus years, and follows the relationship of Emma and Dex on one day each year. It’s beautiful but devastating so be prepared to cry.
And finally, another Avon author. The Forbidden Promise is a World War Two novel set in Scotland across times. It’s a romantic and heartwrenching story of a 21-year-old woman in 1940s Scotland hiding a secret from her family and another woman in modern-day rediscovering said secret and its consequences.
