Next up on the best books series is the Best Books Beginning with M. These are books that I have read and would genuinely recommend that happen to begin with the letter M.

Best Books Beginning with Me

Me by Elton John

First up, is a brilliant memoir. I highly recommend listening to the audiobook – narrated by Taron Egerton with Elton reading the foreword. Taron even sings! It’s a fantastic insight into the life of Elton John, which was filled with drama, mistakes and lots of sex/drugs/rock and roll.

The Midwich Cuckoos by John Wyndham

A modern sci-fi classic. The Midwich Cuckoos has the best opening scene I’ve ever read. It’s the story of a small village where a strange sleepiness forces all the residents to pass out for 12 hours. And when they wake, all the women are pregnant. The children they have grow quicker than the average child, and are much smarter and dangerous. Very clever and very dark.

Modern Love edited by Daniel Jones

A beautiful collection of real lives essays featured in the New York Times about love. From the love of a husband and wife going through a divorce, to the love of a father figure, the love of a friend with bipolar to the love of a mother who knows she is dying. It’s heartwarming and emotional, and all real.

Money by Laura Whateley

If you’re not the best at handling money or need more guidance on things like investment or credit cards, then this book is perfect! Insightful, easy to understand and relevant to most.

The Multi-Hyphen Method by Emma Gannon

A personal favourite of mine is The Multi-Hyphen Method, a non-fiction book about having the career you want. You can be more than one thing and have more than one career that works for you, without burning out.

Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie

This feels like the original locked-room thriller, set on Bear Island. There’s a reason this is Agatha Christie’s best-selling standalone novel. It’s unbelievably clever and atmospheric.

My Friend Anna by Rachel Williams DeLoache

If you loved Inventing Anna on Netflix then this is the book that started it. Rachel Williams DeLoache is the friend who is lambasted in the show for being a money-grabbing friend. However, this book is her story and I think I feel for her more than Anna from this non-fiction take. What would you do if your friend takes $50,000 from your company credit card?

My Girls by Todd Fisher

A memoir from the brother of Carrie Fisher, and the son of Debbie Reynolds. This poignant memoir is all about life growing up as the son and brother of a famous Hollywood duo. From the beginning of his life to the years after the deaths of his beloved family members, this is a sensitively handled biography from the man who loved them most.

My Salinger Year by Joanna Rakoff

If you’re in publishing or interested in working in publishing then I would recommend My Salinger Year. Joanna was an agent’s assistant who was responsible for handling J.D. Salinger’s mail and got the opportunity to talk to the famously reclusive author. It’s non-fiction about her time as an underpaid publishing staff member, but also the story of a writer in the making. Wonderful.

My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh

And finally, one of my favourite reads of 2020. This literary fiction novel packs a punch. The main character has lost her parents and instead of grieving and getting on with life, she decides to spend the year sleeping instead. She has a love-hate relationship with her best friend and the ending is dark. But the story is well-crafted and the writing is truly immersive.
