We’re nearing the middle of the alphabet in my Best Books Beginning With series, and today I’m sharing book recommendations based on the best books beginning with K that I’ve read.

Here are the books that I recommend.

Best Books Beginning with K

Kick by Paula Byrne

First up is a historical biography of Kathleen ‘Kick’ Kennedy, the youngest sister of JFK, the president of the United States. Kick was a fascinating young woman who died way too young, at just 28 in a plane crash. She was an anglophile, who fell in love with the heir of Chatsworth. She gave up her family in the US to marry him during the Second World War, but sadly he was killed shortly afterwards. She was beloved by her family, a lovely woman by the sound of it, and famous for kicking off her shoes whenever she sat down, hence her nickname. I would highly recommend learning more about her.

Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain

Next, a memoir from the late-great, chef Anthony Bourdain. Anthony sadly committed suicide several years ago now, but was known for being a master in the kitchen. This fast-paced memoir shares a glimpse behind the swinging doors of the antics that occur in a professional kitchen. Fast-paced, mesmerising and surprising.

Know My Name by Chanel Miller

Know My Name is a slow but heart-racing memoir by the woman who was assaulted by the awful Brock Turner at Standford University. Chanel Miller gave up her right to anonymity by publishing her account of the truly ridiculous and terrible nature of the American Justice system, which protects rapists – particularly male rapists – from being properly prosecuted. It will infuriate you, but also make you admire Chanel Miller’s bravery all the more.

Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982 by Cho Nam-Joo

A novel that has sparked the feminist movement in Korea. This translated novel, is the story of the slow unravelling of Kim Jiyoung, under the pressure of intense misogyny in Korea. It’s dark and frustrating, but a very important read.

Kindred by Octavia Butler

Kindred is a unique science-fiction novel, that has a woman from the 20th century time travelling back to the time of slavery in the southern states of America. She has no control over her travel and can pull people – such as her white husband – with her into the past. But she seems to be connected to one family, and one son in particular. It is harrowing and terrifying, but utterly compelling.

Knots and Crosses by Ian Rankin

And finally, the first novel in the famous Inspector Rebus series by Ian Rankin. This Scottish set police-procedural is dark and mysterious, with a killer twist and compulsive characters. You can see why this series now has 24 books in it!

Have you read any of the above? And what would you say are the best books beginning with K that you’ve read? Let me know in the comments below.
