10 Free Christmas Things to do in London
See the Christmas Tree in Trafalgar Square
A classic trip for any Londoner. Make sure you see the Christmas Tree in Trafalgar Square. It’s sent by Norway each year, as a thank-you for our support during the Second World War. The tree-lighting ceremony usually takes place on the first Thursday of December.
See the Christmas Angels in Piccadilly
If you love Christmas lights, take a walk up Piccadilly to see the Christmas Angels that dress the streets of Soho. They look amazing in the evening and light up the West End for two months. Well worth a photo opp.
Walk around Leicester Square Christmas Market
If you love a Christmas market – even if just for the smell of roast chestnuts and mulled wine – I recommend the Leicester Square Christmas market. Set in the heart of the square, these huts sell all manner of Christmas items for gifts and eating.
See the light installations at Winterfest in Wembley Park
I’ve been told that the light installations at Winterfest in Wembley Park are the best in the city. From the 25th of November, this free light trail is available for anyone to follow. The perfect Christmas experience to enjoy with friends.
Experience the hustle and bustle of Christmas at Harrods
If you want to get the true Christmas shopping experience, be brave and take a trip to Harrods. They have a floor dedicated solely to Christmas, with decorations and toys. But the food court, cosmetics, and furniture floors are equally as festive at Christmas time.
Go to the Advent Carol Services at St Paul’s Cathedral
On Saturday 27th November or Sunday 28th November you can attend a free carol service at St Paul’s Cathedral. And again on Thursday 23rd December and Friday 24th December. An amazing experience for classic Christmas fans.
Wander along the Southbank
If you enjoy the ambiance of Christmas time, take a wander up the Southbank in the early evening. From the illuminations of London’s bridges, the mini pop-up restaurants, and Christmas markets, there is something to draw the eye everywhere you look.
Visit Covent Garden
If you love all things Christmas you must head to Covent Garden at Christmas. On the hour from noon until 7 pm, snow machines are set to go live so that you can experience the market in a classic snowscape. If you miss these moments, you’ll still see the magnificent market Christmas tree. And the massive mistletoe that hang in the courtyard. Photo opportunities abound in every corner. Add the buskers, the LEGO installations, and the market and you have a few hours of Christmas delight.
Go to the Seven Dials Winter Festival
The weekend of the 19th-21st November is the annual Seven Dials Winter Festival. Just off Covent Garden, this weekend festival is a must in London. Register for free and you can get a glass of prosecco upon arrival.
Enjoy Christmas by the River
And finally, from the 16th of November, Christmas by the River returns. The river by London Bridge will be illuminated and packed with wooden huts and the scent of mulled wine. Perfect for a winter evening stroll with friends.
