10 Films to Watch On Disney+
If you’re looking for a film to watch after work tonight or at the weekend, here are 10 films to watch on Disney+ which I highly recommend.
This new Disney classic is fun whether you’re watching with a partner, friends, family, or on your own. You’ll be singing We Don’t Talk About Bruno for days after though, but still worth it!
Saving Mr Banks
A personal favourite that always moves me to tear, but also brings a smile to my face. Any movie that has both Emma Thompson and Tom Hanks is going to be a big hit and this one was a well-deserved one.
Walk the Line
Another biopic, this time a musical one. Joaquin Phoenix did a career-defining u-turn by portraying Johnny Cash in this incredible musical movie. Reese Witherspoon also smashed it as his high-spirited and equally talented on-again-off-again love of his life, June Carter. Another one to you’ll need tissues to watch – especially the early scenes! – but it’s worth it.
Another Emma Thompson movie, this time with her as the villainous Baroness and Emma Stone as Cruella. This early-days hero-to-villain origin story is worth watching just for the costumes alone. Not to mention the 1970s soundtrack.
The Secret Life of Bees
This movie adaptation was created from one of my favourite books by Sue Monk Kidd. It’s a moving story about racial inequality in the 1960s as well as feminism, religion, and young love. Bring the whole box of tissues!
I love a fairytale and retelling, this feminist Cinderella retelling is beautiful, romantic and just the right amount of cheesy. Dougray Scott was never my go-to Prince Charming but he is very lovable in this and Drew Barrymore smashes it as the feminist and well-educated Danielle de Barbarac.
10 Things I Hate About You
Another retelling but this time of a Shakespeare adaptation. This hilarious 1990s romance is based on The Taming of the Shrew, and Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger are brilliant as the warring couple. Plus Heath Ledger performing Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You is one of the best musical numbers in any movie out there.
The Mighty Ducks
I love The Mighty Ducks trilogy, it’s a pivotal part of my childhood and it’s just a lot of fun. Emilio Estevez not taking himself too seriously, young Joshua Jackson, and a whole ensemble who are extremely lovable, funny, and entertaining. Well worth spending an afternoon watching all three back to back, and then the new series!
The Book Thief
This moving World War Two drama is an adaptation of the beautiful novel by Markus Zusak. The movie adaptation is strong – particularly because of the acting from Emily Watson and Geoffrey Rush as Liesel’s adoptive parents. It’s narrated by Death, as a character, and it’s wonderfully told if heartbreaking. Disney do love a pull-at-the-heart-strings film.
The Kings Man
And finally, the final movie in the Kingsman franchise. This prequel tells the story of the creation of The Kingsman. With a star-studded cast, unexpected moments, and a lot of jokes – think Deadpool vibes – this is a fun, night-in movie with popcorn and a beer.
And those are my top recommendations of 10 films to watch on Disney+ right now. If you have any suggestions let me know in the comments below.
