10 Adult Things I Do Now | 2021 Edition
A few years ago I shared a post about 10 Adult Things I Do Now and I thought I would update it with my latest adulting activities.
I give blood
I’ve got a universal blood type so giving blood is very important and high on my priority list. It’s been difficult getting donations sorted this year, but I’ve managed to get my next one booked in for this week. Not the most fun in the world but exceptionally important.
I have smear tests
The joys of turning twenty-five mean that smear tests are a designated event in my life. Don’t fear the smear though ladies! I’ve not had great experiences, but that won’t stop me from being precautious.
I get smart meters installed
I’ve been paying bills for a while now, but now I’ve upgraded – both the system and my adulting skills! – by having smart meters installed. With three attempts down and one to go I should have my gas sorted by the end of the month.
I paint/renovate my flat (with the landlord’s permission!)
My landlord is a gem and lets me do whatever I like to my flat. As such I’ve painted my bedroom, created a garden, filled in holes, and just generally decorated. It’s been lovely. And there is still so much to do.
I do my own tax return
I hate it – who likes it?! – but I do my own tax return each year. This year is going to be a lot of fun… not!
I go to the garden centre on weekends
When it’s sunny and I’m just pottering around my flat, what do I do? I go to the local garden centre and buy fuschias, lavender, and compost. No shame.
I got excited about buying a hoover
When I got my advance payment for my first book, the first thing I did was buy an expensive hoover – with a warranty! It was like putting down a down payment on a flat. And to this day I still consider this the best financial decision I’ve ever made.
I upped my pension payments
When you get a tiny pay rise with inflation, don’t get used to spending that extra £50-70 a month on takeaways. Instead up your monthly pension payment plan from 4% to 4.5% per month. Exciting right. Well… not right now.
I complain
The waitress brought out cold food for the table, I’ll complain. My parcel is marked ‘delivered’ but I don’t have it, I’ll complain. The post office doesn’t take AMEX but it says they do on their website, I’ll complain. You get the gist.
I have savings
As an adult, particularly one that lives alone and rents, I decided that getting a savings account was in order. I put in a little each month and if I get a windfall it goes into savings rather than straight out via an ASOS order.
