20 Feminist Halloween Costume Ideas

Halloween is nearly upon us and I thought I would give everyone a heads up to get their costumes in order!

Now I am a stringent feminist and I don’t believe we should use Halloween a chance to be sexy – I feel like we should everyday to feel sexy, if we want to. That being said I do quite enjoy dressing up.

As such, here are 20 Feminist Halloween Costume Ideas for you guys to take away and do with as you please.

Greek Goddess

I am a big fan of greek mythology so this idea totally appeals to me. Plus, the Greek Goddess were bad ass women back in the day! Athena, Aphrodite, Hera – they had tons of power and did whatever the hell they liked, just as much as the men.

Amelia Earhart

A classic look but one that is nevertheless important to historical buffs – like me – everywhere

Statue of Liberty

Die a bed-sheet teal green and whack on some gold spray glitter and you’re good to go… okay you might need a few other accessories like a flaming torch but I’m sure there are plenty of these about.

Female Doctor Who

New for 2019! We can now dress up as an official female doctor who, and not just female versions of the male doctor who! Rock those colourful suspenders and grey coat and remember to run!

Ruth Badger Ginsburg

Now, with the recent movie On the Basis of Sex released we have two versions of Ruth Bader Ginsburg we can dress up as! Either go mature and classic judge of the world or more 1950s chic, with the same attitude of course.

Hermione Granger/Luna Lovegood

There is a plethora of Harry Potter cast members you could dress up as this Halloween, from classic Hermione to slightly mad Tonks. Find your spirit character and go all in. Maybe you’re a student from Beauxbaton, or a proud Hufflepuff like Hannah Abbot. Who knows.

Megan Rapinoe

My personal choice for 2019 is Megan Rapinoe. The American female football player who shot to fame alongside her team when they won the World Cup this Summer. With some black shades, purple streaks in your hair and a trophy on your hip – just shout I deserve this! for the world to hear and you have a classic costume for years to come.

Rey

This Christmas see’s the final – it won’t be final – Star Wars movie released. Will Rey be a Skywalker? I don’t know, but she’ll definitely be a Halloween costume this year.

Anna Wintour

The legendary editor-in-chief of Vogue is a hard woman to ape with her chic style and burning attitude. But why not have ago, it’s so much fun! For inspiration, see RuPaul’s Drag Race Alaska for inspiration!

Wonder Woman

Spin around in circle all you like, this outfit is still a classic appearance at Halloween. From the Themyscira costume to the classic gold cuffs and dramatic red and blue swimsuit, this is a fun role to play at any party.

Moana

You’re welcome! Bring along a pig, a chicken and some good Disney tunes to sing-a-long with. A family-friendly feminist costume.

Mrs Maisel

The Marvellous Mrs Maisel is a feat of magnificent TV and her style is legendary! From traditional black dress with white gloves and pearls, to flamboyant holiday outfits and even nightgowns. Bring some wit and a handful of hilarious insults to throw at people and you’re away.

Handmaid

This is a classic costume that needs no explaining. It’s time to find those wing’s girls and protest throughout the city of Gilead.

A League of their Own Baseball Player

love this movie and this is my favourite Halloween costume to date. These gals were a hit during the war and this movie is one of my all-time favourites! Not only for it’s memorable lines – there is no crying in baseball – but also it’s heart, themes and the performance of all the actors in it.

Okoye

Who could not love Okay from Black Panther? She is awesome! I want to be her friend, but I’m pretty sure she wouldn’t be that friendly to me. Not only is she an amazing fighter, she has a killer comedic streak and is loyal to self-destruction. Amazing. And wig optional.

Eliza Hamilton

The wife of Alexander Hamilton should be mentioned, after all she wrote his story. She lived more than fifty years than her husband, created America’s first orphanage and was an all-round saint. Yet she is often over-looked because of her husband. Ladies, do not waste this shot!

Olive from Easy A

I think Easy A is one of the best teen movies out there. The wit is incredible and the general plot is fantastic. Emma Stone excels in the role and she gives us a ton of outfits to use as inspiration in our Halloween repertoire as well. I would recommend the original A costume wit the black shades and corset.

Black Widow

I cannot overlooked Black Widow this Halloween. Her sacrifice was part of the reason why Endgame made us all cry and her ever-changing hair colour gives each and everyone of us a colour palette to work with.

Velma from Scooby Doo

Last but not least we have Velma. Who couldn’t love Velma in her orange turtleneck sweaters and nasally voice. She’s so lovable and surprisingly chic for a cartoon character.
